What is the Armonica?
The Armonica was invented by Benjamin Franklin in 1761. (It is called "Glass Harmonica” or "Armonica” in classical music, Chiho calls “Crystal Armonica” because it’s made of pure quartz crystal)
It is made of series of pure quartz crystal bowls combined as one instruments. (Chiho’s Armonica has 30 crystal bowls.) The haunting and heavenly sounds are created when wet fingers were pressed along the rims of the bowls as they rotate, just like playing the wine glasses.
The Armonica was one of the most celebrated instruments of the 18th century and it became a popular instrument throughout Europe. Composers such as Mozart and Beethoven composed music specifically for the Armonica. The Armonica gained such popularity and recognition that even the French Queen Marie Antoinette took lessons and learned to play the Armonica.
Dr. Franz Mesmer (1734–1815) was German physician who owned a particularly fine Armonica. It's from Dr. Mesmer that we get the word “mesmerize". Dr. Mesmer claims that the Armonica was healing and curing his patient’s physical or mental conditions and was “mesmerising” patients with its unique sound made him very famous.
